twinkiesIn order to lose weight one must take in fewer calories than one burns. This diet theory has been around for a long, long time, and a Professor of Nutrition at Kansas State University, Mark Haub, recently put it to the test. He went on what he referred to as the Twinkie Diet for 10 weeks and lost a whopping 27 pounds!

As a veteran of many diets, I found going back to this basic premise a very intriguing experiment indeed. Haub’s “snack-centric” diet was meant to prove that weight loss can be achieved by pure calorie counting regardless of the nutritional value of the food. Though he took a multivitamin and had a protein shake daily made with whole milk, the rest of his calories came from junk food like Hostess Twinkie Golden Sponge Cake, Little Debbie Cakes, Oreos, Doritos and Sugar Corn Pops. Occasionally he would throw in some carrot or celery sticks, or a can of green beans. Prior to this experiment Haub was consuming about 2600 calories a day. Eating primarily junk food though, he consumed only about 1800 calories a day on his new diet.

Now, this flies in the face of most, if not all of the diet programs out there, especially ones like Atkins, “Protein Power,” the “Paleolithic Diet,” and other low carb diets. It would certainly not be in line with some of the more popular commercial diets like Jenny Craig, LA Weight Loss and Weight Watchers, which espouse balanced nutrition. Nonetheless, calories are definitely reduced on these programs. Many commercial programs are around 1200 to 1300 calories a day. And finally, the National Diabetes Association would be rightfully alarmed about ingesting all that refined sugar in spite of the reduced calorie intake!

There’s more irony. Not only did Haub lose 27 pounds, his body fat dropped from 33.4 to 24.9 percent—nearly ten percentage points! His bad cholesterol (LDL) dropped 20 percent and his (HDL) good cholesterol, increased 20 percent, plus his triglycerides were reduced by 39 percent. All his health markers improved on a “convenience store” diet, as he referred to it, demonstrating the impact that losing weight has on health.

Prior to this experiment Haub says he tried to eat a healthy diet, which included whole grains, fiber, fresh fruits and vegetables, with only occasional indulgences like pizza. However, he claims that while he was eating healthier before, he was simply eating too much!

Dr. Oz commented on this phenomenon on his show Tuesday morning, November 30th, saying that the math didn’t work for him. Haub only reduced his calorie intake by 800 calories a day and that should not have added up to such a dramatic weight loss in such a short time. Dr. Oz also warned that the quality of those calories, for anyone considering giving the Twinkie diet a try, are empty calories, which burn quickly and leave a person hungry again soon after eating.

So, we’ve got the math, along with the issue of the type of calories consumed, but here’s the rub: millions of people practice some form of calorie deprivation every year, either on their own, or through a commercial weight loss program. Millions of people lose weight as a result. However, there is a 95% recidivism rate among dieters—only 5% keep the weight off permanently. So I will be very curious to see if the Professor eventually puts all those pounds back on—plus some!

Dennis: Kathy you are renowned for being a proponent of simplicity… I like to call it effective simplicity, in your view what SIMPLE choices can someone make to get the ball rolling towards wellness? Is there a rule or theory that can be implemented to guide someone trying to achieve a better fitness level?


Kathy: Yes Dennis, because of all the options available and various diets that exist presently confusion is the ultimate result. To streamline things I simply say MOVE YOUR BODY! As long has you continue the routine of movement your regimen will be effective.

Just follow the principle that as soon as your foot hits the ground get that workout in! Kathy: Foods that are one step away from being at the original state.


Dennis: I like that concept!


Kathy: I feel out of sync when I go a period of time away from my more natural foods. I find that my performance is heightened when my body is fueled by the right food, raw or one step away from their natural state. Try it and be empowered.


Dennis: What is your most exotic food indulgence?


Kathy: Chocolate, the fresher the better..awww chocolate. Breyers is making that indulgence of mine all the more guilt free…Ice cream dipped in chocolate and low calorie is a winning combination within my 90/10 approach. Kathy: Honey Crisp Apples when they are available. They are grown in Minnesota I think.

Kathy: KALE, you have to try my recipe KATHY’S KALE.


Dennis: I heard you were a Kale fanatic, my dad is a Swiss Chard lover so I can relate, sort off.


Kathy: I am a proponent of the nutrition powerhouse that is Kale and it is important in the diet of my children.


Dennis: Final Question Kathy, if you led a double life what would be you secret profession?


Kathy: I would be right here in New York City on Broadway! Theatre! Always Moving Dennis!

Week Four and Down Four More Pounds with BistroMD

jumping for joyWhat’s up people?! I hope you all are as hyped about life as I am right now! I feel like a new man already! I have managed to lose 15 pounds in the last four weeks, but most importantly, I feel energized! Look at all the exclamation points in my first paragraph, can’t you tell I’m excited?!?!?!?!?!


As the days go by things seem to be rolling more smoothly. I have been training myself to enjoy every moment, even the hard ones. I realized that every choice we make from the moment we rise to the moment we sleep determines the outcome of our lives. We have great dreams of what we’d like our lives to be like, and we find happiness in our thoughts of prosperity. However, when we think of the work it takes to bring those dreams to life, we suddenly find ourselves discouraged.


If we learn to enjoy each moment, even the most difficult ones, we can overcome any obstacle that we face. If we learn to enjoy the work that it takes to reach our dreams, I guarantee that soon they will no longer be dreams. What I have found to be challenging for me is starting and staying on a diet. In the past I would dread even the thought of dieting, but now that I use BistroMD I don’t even have to think about it. So it makes this whole journey much more enjoyable.


So I will continue on this path with BistroMD by my side. I will enjoy every last moment of it. From difficult to easy, from boring to fun, from sad to happy, and from mad to excited. No matter how I feel I will enjoy it all. Because each moment we face creates who we are as people and I believe I am in the process of creating a whole new me. Who Loves and Who Hates the Honey and Cinnamon Drink?

Recently I stumbled upon some “interesting” article published in a popular articles network that criticizes Honey and Cinnamon for Weight Loss in a way that is so lame that I got really pissed. Obviously the article’s author has never read about the hundreds of people worldwide, who have lost pounds with the Honey and Cinnamon Drink and for those athletes who keep themselves in great shape using the Honey and The Hibernation Diet by Mike McInnes.

The author obviously hasn’t read anything from Mike McInnes – the creator of the Honey and The Hibernation Diet – who is explaining very thoroughly the exact effect of honey over human body: “Honey, prior to bed, optimizes liver glycogen plenitude via fructose and glucose uptake, honey activates sleep via insulin and melatonin, honey promotes optimal recovery (fat burning)…” so in fact honey optimizes liver glycogen plenitude, doesn’t rise it up to the sky like the article’s author claims.

Anyway, I wouldn’t like to make this post written out of anger because some guy somewhere criticizes the honey and cinnamon for weight loss.

I know my regular reader and I know how many of them have actually lost pounds and have improved their health after taking the honey and cinnamon drink. Only a very few have reported minimal or no results. That’s normal of course there is no universal cure to work for everybody and that’s not only for weight loss, that’s a general truth.
